All UK universities are eligible whether or not they are a member of ERCOFTAC (https://www.ercoftac.org/).

How to enter

To enter the 2024 competitions, candidates should submit, as sole authors, a 3-page summary of their research, which should be structured as follows:

  1. Title of the work

  2. Name, affiliation, and email address

  3. Name of supervisor(s)

  4. List of 5 keywords characterising the work

  5. Research objectives, route, methodology, main results and achievements

  6. Up to three publications considered by the author to best represent the work

  • Formatting: The 3-page summary should be in a single-column format and the typeface should be no smaller than 11pt. Blank lines should separate sections, headings, figures, captions and title.

  • Figures: The inclusion of relevant graphical material is strongly encouraged, and associated captions should be clear and explicit, in line with standard practice in high-quality journals. Emphasis should be given to novelty and originality of the findings, and their relevance to engineering practice, if appropriate.

  • Submission: The summary should be sent, via email, to Dr Nick Daish by 5:00pm on Monday 8th April 2024.

Selection Procedure

  • Assessment: Candidates are urged to prepare their summaries carefully, as these are the principal means by which their work is assessed by the selection panel. Each summary will be reviewed by at least two senior academics who are specialists in the subject of the research. The papers will be ranked by the review panel and the selection of the top six made by Monday 13th May 2024. The authors will be invited to present their work in the Osborne Reynolds Day competition. The presentations at the Osborne Reynolds Day will be assessed by a panel of judges, who will select one overall winner and two runners-up.

  • Prizes: All finalists will receive individual certificates of their contribution to Osborne Reynolds Day 2024 and the top three presentations will receive cash prizes. They will also be put forward as the UK’s nominations to compete in the 2024 ERCOFTAC da Vinci competition.
